Andrew Hastie was first elected to the House of Representatives at the 2015 by-election for the Division of Canning, Western Australia.
Prior to entering Parliament, Andrew studied Philosophy and History at the University of New South Wales. Andrew joined the Australian Defence Force in 2003, attending the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) and Royal Military College Duntroon. Andrew served as an officer in the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Darwin, and the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) in Perth, being deployed to Afghanistan, the Middle-East, and the Asia-Pacific.
Since entering parliament Andrew has fought to deliver better services and job opportunities for the people of Canning. This has included a particular focus on tackling the devastating impact of drug abuse in the local community, and lobbying Canberra for greater infrastructure investment in the Peel region.
In 2017 Andrew was appointed as Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security. The Committee is charged with parliamentary oversight of Australia’s intelligence and security agencies, and the task of reviewing national security legislation.
