It’s clear Perth-Labor have no plan to deal with the crime crisis in Canarvon.
The State Government’s terrible track record on local crime, like in so many regional towns, confirms they don’t respect the bush,” said Will Baston, Liberal candidate for North West Central.
“The situation in Carnarvon is complex and a one-size fits all approach delivered from Perth won’t cut it,” he said.
“It’s time the State Government listened to the solutions of local people, who know what we need to do.”
The Shire of Carnarvon has endorsed a proposal to pilot an ‘Intensive Family and Community Intervention 2022-2023’ project.
“The Shire’s project has the broad support of the community because it represents a different approach to the failed policies of the past,” said Mr Baston.
“Importantly, it brings local organisations, which are already funded to deliver services within Carnarvon, together to address the increasing rates of juvenile crime and anti-social behaviour.
“However, it’s disappointing the Shire’s proposal hasn’t received any support from the State Government, even with the current crime crisis gripping Carnarvon.
WA Police Crime Statistics indicate that, across the suburbs of Carnarvon, criminal offences have jumped alarmingly, including a 65% increase in assault to non-family members, 56% increase in dwelling burglary and a 60% increase in motor car theft over the 12 months to 30 June 2022 when compared to the previous year.
“This means people living in Carnarvon are around six times more likely to be assaulted (excluding domestic violence), ten times more likely to have their home burgled and businesses are 11 times more likely to be broken into than a business in Perth,” said Mr Baston.
“Locals deserve better, and the State Government must work with the community on a long-term solution.
