Candidate for Central Wheatbelt
Bill Crabtree was born in Pemberton, raised on a south coast farm, studied at Jerramungup and Melville before completing a B.Ag.Sci and M.Sci degree from UWA. He worked in WA’s wheatbelt for the Department of Agriculture for 12 years and also travelled to Canada before returning to work for the WA No-Till Farmers Association before becoming a farm consultant and a wheatbelt crop farmer.
Bill is married to Monique, together they have four grown children all educated in Northam. Bill has an active social life, being involved in various community groups including; coaching football and T-Ball, being President of the Esperance Basketball Association, playing in a winning Football Grand Final with Boxwood Hills, completing in the Avon Descent four times (won it once), playing field hockey and the guitar. He has been in a Barbers Shop Quartet and has even been a Father Christmas. Bill has been active in church life since his youth and has taken many leadership roles in church life.
Bill is passionate about sustainable agriculture and has won four awards to this end, including the Australian 2009 McKell Medal. He has also published a book on sustainable agriculture. The work that Bill has done with No-Tillage is internationally acclaimed and it has been pivotal in helping Australian farmers maintain their profitability during the recent dry naughty years and keeping WA regional communities strong.
