Matt Taylor MP is the Liberal Party candidate for the newly created seat of Bicton at the March 2017 State Election.
Matt is married to Angela and they are blessed with two young boys, Noah and Jacob. Matt believes family structure, good parenting and strong values are fundamental to creating resilient and vibrant communities. He seeks to lead by example and is eager to support local families.
Having grown up in East Fremantle where he attended Richmond Primary School, Matt has a long-standing close connection with the Bicton electorate. Over this time he has seen the increasing traffic congestion as he travels the local roads each day. He and his family have always supported local businesses including daycare, retail, health care and hospitality. They also regularly use the excellent local government recreational facilities for swimming lessons, swimming laps, gym and the library.
Matt cares about the community and wants to serve by solving problems, creating opportunities and connecting people. He is an active listener who is good at obtaining essential information and using it wisely. He puts others ahead of himself and works tirelessly to achieve results. Matt has a reputation for being reliable, honest, respectful, discerning, positive and trustworthy.
Matt has set up and managed numerous businesses and enjoys working with local businesses to help them thrive. He has also been a Company Director and understands the responsibility that comes with owning and operating a business. In addition to working in the private sector, Matt has also gained experience in the three levels of government including a senior management role with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.
He has almost ten years’ leadership experience in planning some of WA’s largest and most innovative urban and industrial developments. This expertise will prove invaluable as Perth continues to grow and Bicton responds to the need for sensible and well-planned urban infill developments in our inner suburbs.
Matt would embrace the responsibility and privilege of serving the people of Bicton and believes his character, strong family values and understanding of business stand him in good stead to represent the electorate effectively.
His depth of skills, experience and knowledge are already providing to be of immediate benefit in a wide range of portfolios including Planning, Science and Innovation, State Development, Fisheries, Environment, Water, Regional Development and Lands, Energy, Transport, and Small Business. Not only is Matt a great representative of his local community, he is also a valuable contributor to the Parliament and State.
Since being elected to WA Parliament in 2013, Matt has been a strong advocate for his local community and has facilitated regular interaction with the schools, community groups, businesses, and residents in his electorate in order to better understand the aspirations and needs of the community.
In addition to his hard work as a local Member, Matt has also participated in various parliamentary committees including the influential Public Accounts Committee, where he participated in inquiries into local government accountability, public sector management, and ICT procurement and Contract management.
In 2016 Matt was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and later as Parliamentary Secretary for Innovation. In these roles Matt has focussed on the ways that government can best adapt to an increasingly digital economy, ensuring that WA businesses and individuals are best placed to compete and succeed in a globally competitive environment.
