Minister for Local Government; Community Services; Seniors and Volunteering; Youth
Member for Wanneroo
Paul came to Australia from the UK as a child in 1970, with his family. They lived in Cedric Street, Balcatta when they first arrived and he was enrolled in Osborne Park Primary School. Years later his family moved to Girrawheen and then Koondoola as his family grew, and Paul became one of five children.
Paul has always had an interest in politics. He started to get involved in politics through handing out ‘How to Vote’ cards for Mick Nanovich, the Member for Wanneroo at the time. He also assisted Paul Filing and Dr Mal Washer with their Federal election campaigns.
Paul’s interest in politics became very serious when Richard Court was the Premier of WA. Paul supported Iain MacLean, another former Member for Wanneroo, with his election campaigns in 1996 and 2001. Paul has always been a Liberal supporter, and believes that it’s the only Party which believes in freedom of choice for the individual.
Paul met his wife Shelly while they were both volunteering at the local youth centre, and together they had a son, Jacob. Paul also has a daughter, Anna, from a previous marriage, and is a proud grandfather of two grandchildren, Mark and Ruby.
Paul’s community involvement includes over 30 years of service with the Wanneroo Lions Club, serving as a Ward Councillor for the City of Wanneroo, being involved with Local Drug Action Groups and being involved in the planting of trees for Greening Australia.
Since becoming the Member for Wanneroo, he counts the building of Joseph Backs Secondary College and the provision of zoning certainty in East Wanneroo (which local residents have been waiting for, for 20 years) amongst his strongest achievements for the people of Wanneroo.
As Chairman of the Mitchell Freeway Extension Community Working Group, Paul was heavily involved in the community consultation process for the next stage of the Mitchell Freeway, running from Burns Beach Road to Hester Avenue. This project will, when completed in mid-2017, help to alleviate the majority of traffic issues on major roads in and around Wanneroo.
Paul is also a great supporter of the Wanneroo Agriculture Society, the Wanneroo Show, and is Patron of the Lake Joondalup Lifestyle Village Social Club and the Sun City Yacht Club.
In 2013 Paul became the Parliamentary Secretary for Commerce, and has continued to work hard for the people of Western Australia in that role.
As part of Colin Barnett’s team Paul has had the great privilege and pleasure of being able to extend his experience in serving the community, and in being your local Member of Parliament.
In 2016, Paul was appointed Minister for Local Government; Community Services; Seniors and Volunteering; Youth and continues to serve as a key member of the WA Liberal Government.
