Enjoy a cuppa for Teal Tea appeal during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

The Opposition has encouraged West Australians to enjoy a cup of tea today to boost awareness of ovarian cancer and raise vital funds to support those affected.

Opposition Leader Mia Davies said ovarian cancer is considered Australia’s deadliest cancer for females, with one Australian woman losing her life every eight hours.

“Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month serves as a reminder to recognise and remember the signs of ovarian cancer, and educate all Australians on diagnosis and treatment,” Ms Davies said.

“Today was the official day to host a Teal Tea event to raise awareness of Australia’s deadliest female cancer and to encourage donations for researchers, by simply enjoying a cuppa.

“There are many other ways West Australians can fundraise this month, including buying a teal ribbon or registering for Giving Day on February 23rd where every dollar is matched by a major donor.

“As well as getting involved with fundraising this month, we also encourage all West Australian women to book in a check-up with their doctor.”

Shadow Health Minister Libby Mettam said given there is no early detection test for ovarian cancer all women need to be aware of the symptoms.

“This is the value of discussing your concerns with your GP in the first instance,” Ms Mettam said.

“Each year, over 1500 women will be diagnosed with this cancer and tragically over 1000 will die from the disease.”

Member for East Metropolitan Region Donna Faragher said bringing attention to this terrible disease through annual events like Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month was a valuable way to raise awareness.

“It is a chance to acknowledge the incredible research being undertaken across Australia to fight this disease,” Ms Faragher said.
